Recycled Light Bulb Bug

Kansas City has a fantastic light display during the holiday season. Jenny wondered what happened to the bulbs that would burn out during the holidays. She managed to get the old, discarded bulbs and went on to create a fun light-bulb bug sculpture.

Materials:

any light bulb
any bendable wire, sturdy enough to support bulb
copper mesh
tissue paper
Mod Podge or glue/water mixture
paint brush
fake eyelashes
plastic doll eyes, fishing lure stick-on eyes, or beads
epoxy glue
toothpick
scrap cardboard for mixing epoxy
needle-nose pliers with wire cutter
beads with hole large enough for wire
scissors

1. Bend, form and attach leg, antennae and wing wire to the light bulb using pliers (figure A).

2. Epoxy the wires in place (figure B).

3. While epoxy is drying, cut out an oval of copper mesh. Remove the front half of the plastic eyes from the whole piece and epoxy the front half of the eyes to the copper mesh.

4. Add eyelashes (figure C).

5. Add tissue to wing armature using Mod Podge and a paint brush (figure D).

6. Add beads to legs and antennae. Roll up wires using pliers so that beads will stay on.

7. Form legs so bug will stand up.

8. Epoxy eyes to bug.
