Shoebox: Paper Sock Monkey, Photo Crossword Quilt, Garden CDs, Mosaic Card Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-1715 -- More Projects » By Carol Duvall
It was a full Shoebox today, starting off with three paper sock monkeys designed and made Lenora Wood of Parsonburg, Md. These funny little fellows were made from double-sided paper and were posed in the traditional "Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil" poses as they sat on a shelf on my desk. I'm guessing that Lenora does a fair amount of this kind of designing, because a picture of a folded paper pig was featured on her business card. She then sent another folded monkey attached to a note card and holding a baby monkey made from an envelope security lining.

Over the years a number of you have sent photographs of quilts that you have made, but certainly one of the most unusual was the one that Lorraine Squyres of Bozeman, Mont., received from her daughter Amelia. The quilt featured several family photographs that Amelia had transferred to fabric along with several squares of fabric that featured the logos of different railroad lines. It seems that Lorraine really enjoys listening to the sound of the trains going by. But most interesting of all was the main theme of the quilt...a large crossword puzzle! Obviously Lorraine enjoys working crossword puzzles, and this one not only contained a lot of clues about personal items but it really works! Small wooden discs had the letters printed on them and they were attached to the puzzle with small circles of hook-and-loop tape. Off to one side was a large rectangle with the up and down clues. Along one edge was a large pocket folded origami style that held the wooden discs when they were not on the puzzle. Very unusual, very clever and certainly very personal.

Ann Schmid of Berlin, Wisc., sent a pretty picture of her backyard that was lovely in all the greenery featured and interesting because of a number of green discs that seemed to be floating in air. The discs were actually more of those CDs that we all seem to be receiving in the mail, and Ann is obviously one more crafter that has put them to a use the company never intended. Ann cuts a rather long length of the all but invisible monofilament and places it between two back-to-back CDs, placing a bead on the cord that she positions in the center hole. She then glues the CDs together, strings more beads on the monofilament, adds another two back-to-back CDs with a bead in the center hole, glues them together, and then repeats the process one more time. She makes a hanging loop at the top and hangs them in the trees. In fact, from the photograph, she has several hanging in the trees in the backyard. And no, they are not painted green. The highly reflective surface simply reflects the color of the trees.
Viewer Terri Cortelyou of LaHarpe, Ill., sent in a beautiful card that she had made using the technique featured on one of our Holiday Workshop shows last year when we showed Roberta James's mosaic cards made using photographs. In this case, Terri rubber stamped and embossed a number of designs on pieces of card stock and cut them up instead of photos. Done with a snowflake theme using silver embossing powder as the "grout," it was very lovely.
