Host Renai Ellison shows how to antique white plaster accent pieces. One process uses orange shellac and liming wax and the other uses black paint. The plaster pieces can be used as moldings, wall accents and/or ceiling medallions.

Materials:
plaster or resin pieces
paintbrush
stiff-bristled brush
stencil brush
orange shellac
liming wax
craft paint - Burnt Umber color
sponge brush

Steps:

  1. It is important that the plaster or resin you are working with be wet. Using a soft bristle paintbrush, soak the surface by applying several coats of water. The water will absorb quickly, so if you are working an a very large piece, you will want to divide into sections.

Figure A
  • Pounce the orange shellac, using the stiff-bristled brush, into the nooks and crevices of the piece (figure A). One coat will create a mottled, matte surface. A second coat, applied a few minutes later, will create a richer, glossier color. Let dry.

  • Using another paintbrush, apply the liming wax (figure B), making sure to penetrate every area of the piece. Transfer excess wax to new area to insure even coverage. Let dry for 30 minutes.)
