Kathi Cardinelli creates painted curtains based on a portrait by the artist Amedeo Modigliani.

Materials:

pre-made in off-white curtains - tab top type
air-soluble markers
metal ruler
fabric and acrylic paints, fabric markers and paint brushes in various sizes
art print to use as guide – use something like a postcard, reproduction print, etc. This project featured a rendition of one of world-renowned Amedeo Modigliani's portraits of Jeanne Hebuterne, painted in 1918.

Steps:

  1. Spread curtains out on a flat work surface—the floor or a large table would be perfect. You may want to cover area with kraft paper or newspaper.

  2. Use a ruler to grid off the curtains. Make a large grid to work on using an air-soluble fabric marker. Be sure curtains are side-by-side and lined up as you are going to work on them as if they are one large piece of fabric.

    Figure B
  • Using grid-print as a guide, draw in shapes on the curtains. Work one square at a time, finishing the basic lines of that square before moving on (figure B). You can add details later.

    Figure C
  • Using chosen fabric and acrylic paints, fill in the image (figure C). Don't be afraid to mix fabric paints with acrylic paints in order to achieve desired colors. Use a loose painterly style to paint. Layer like colors with strong, pronounced brush strokes to add texture. Let dry well.

  • Now use more paint and fabric markers to add detail to curtains inspired by the print you are using. Let dry well. Curtains are now ready to hang.
