Figure B
Garden Lattice Wall Hanging

Host Renai Ellison explains how to use ordinary garden lattice to create an enchanting wall hanging.

Materials:

lattice
measuring tape
wood molding with dado (crevice)
drill
wood screws or nails
coarse sandpaper
white spray primer
clear glaze
lime-green latex paint
medium-size paintbrushes
burnt sienna glaze
collectibles or accent pieces
decorative ribbon

Steps:

  1. Measure lattice for dimensions and cut accordingly.

  2. Cut molding to make a frame for lattice, and miter the corners.

  3. Place lattice in frame. Use wood glue to secure the frame first, then nail or screw together the corners.

  4. Use coarse sandpaper to thoroughly smooth all rough edges and surfaces. Clear off all excess dust and shavings.

  5. Spray the entire piece with white primer. Two or more coats may be needed.

  6. Mix the clear glaze and green paint, and apply a generous coat. Take care to get paint in all corners and crevices of the unfinished portion of the lattice.

  7. Highlight the edges of the molding frame with the burnt sienna glaze, taking care not to over-apply, then smooth it out with a cloth for a more subtle appearance (figure A).

  8. Hang collectibles, accent pieces or other items with decorative ribbon or twine (figure B).

  9. Attach photo-hanger brackets to the back of the frame if you intend to hang it.
