Turn a simple parsons table into a historic, map-covered piece of art.

Materials:
outdated maps or reproductions antique maps
decoupage glue
craft knife and cutting mat
metal ruler
scissors
paintbrushes
pencil
wallpaper roller or brayer
clear acrylic finish and brush
sand paper or steel wool
a simple Parson’s type table
orange shellac

Steps:

  1. Use ruler, pencil and craft knife to measure, draw and cut shapes from maps to cover the top, sides, legs, etc., of the table (figure A). Work on a cutting mat to avoid damaging the work surface.

  • Position the map pieces on the table top until you decide on the design (figure B).

  • Glue cut pieces onto table using decoupage glue. Let dry well. Press out all air bubbles as you work using a roller or brayer (figure C).

  • Use sandpaper or steel wool to smooth the edges of the pieces of the map.

  • Apply a generous coating of orange shellac using a paintbrush to lend an antique look to the piece (figure D). Let dry

  • Coat entire surface with one or two coats of acrylic sealer, allowing to dry completely between each coat.
