Wallpaper Room Screen
Our Place : Episode OPL-430 -- More Projects »
Transform a plain, three-panel wooden room screen into a fabulous accent piece using decorator wallpaper. Here's how.
Materials:
plain, flat-sided three-panel room screen - if desired, make one using three narrow hollow-core doors and hinges
lengths of wallpaper and borders to match room decor choose interesting motifs (figure A)
coordinating flat latex wall paint
metal ruler, pencil, craft knife, cutting mat, scissors, decoupage glue
wallpaper roller and brushes
kraft paper
orange shellac
paintbrushSteps:
- Paint entire screen with flat latex wall paint. Let dry well.
- Cut three pieces of kraft paper to same size as each screen panel.
- Position kraft paper pieces on a flat surface to serve as paper design templates.
Work out the design for screen on these paper templates. Cut and fit wallpaper pieces on template. Layer wallpaper as desired (figure B). Once the design is to your liking, start moving and gluing pieces to the painted wood screen. Lay the screen down on flat work surface for this part.
Using decoupage glue, apply wallpaper pieces to screen (figure C). Use a wallpaper roller to get out all air bubbles (figure D). Let dry well.
Apply a liberal coat of orange shellac with a paintbrush (figure E). This will "antique" the piece with an aged patina, plus seal the design.
Use the same design on the two outer screens, and a differing design on the middle one. Repeat the design process on the remaining screens.
Connect the screens with double sided brass hinges (figure F)and wood screws, pre-drilling the screw holes.
