Faux Glass Lampshade

Assemble pieces cut from a color photocopies into a grand mosaic lampshade, creating an authentic stained glass look at a fraction of the cost.

Materials:
white paper lampshade
stained glass or milkglass
pencil
scissors
decoupage glue and brush
Liquid Leading in a tube
carbon tracing paper

Steps:


  1. Make color photocopies of stained glass at a copy center. Some glass will copy better than others—use the best ones on the larger areas.

  2. Cover one side of the lampshade with tracing paper.

  • Using stained glass pattern from a book, center pattern on tracing paper and trace (figure A).

  • Repeat step 3 on all four sides of lampshade (figure B).

  • Plan the colors for the design and mark the pattern accordingly.

  • Carefully remove tracing paper and transfer tracing paper to stained glass color copy (figure C).

  • Cut from color copy select pieces of design.

  • Transfer tracing paper to another color copy, and cut more pieces of the design, and repeat until pattern is complete.

  • When you finish cutting, lay the pattern out on the work surface (figure D).

  • Working in small sections, brush decoupage glue onto outside of shade and on the cutout pieces of "glass" (figure E).

  • Position the color copy cutouts in place starting at the top of the shade (figure F). Brush another layer of decoupage glue over the copies; let dry, complete another section.

  • When the lampshade is complete (figure G) and the first layer of decoupage glue is dry, continue to add layers of glue over entire lampshade; allow glue to dry between coats. Five coats will be sufficient.

  • Squeeze lines of Liquid Leading from tube around each cut color copy and around the top and bottom of shade (figure H). Let dry.
