PHOTO
Host Kathi Cardinelli combines stamping and decoupage techniques to create an Asian décor tray.

Materials:
wood tray
black glossy enamel spray paint (work in a well ventilated area)
Chinese print paper
craft knife, straight edge and cutting mat
white glue or decoupage glue
craft paint - black, red, gold
Chinese character stamps (featured project used Chronicle Books Chinese Character stamps by Barbara Aria)
rice paper
gold rubber stamp ink pad
gold metallic Rub’n’Buff
glass or plexi-glass to go inside tray

Steps:

  1. Spray paint the tray gloss black.

  2. Cut Chinese print paper into four, one-inch strips to create a border around tray bottom. If desired, miter the edges of the strips. Cut the four strips of paper to the length of the tray sides.

Figure A
  • Attach paper strips to the tray using white glue or decoupage glue (figure A). Let dry.

  • Cut squares of different color rice paper. Measure the bottom of the tray, and cut appropriately sized squares of rice paper to make a grid with just a small area of border between the squares.

    Figure B
  • Stamp Chinese character designs onto the pieces of rice paper with gold acrylic paint and use decoupage glue to adhere to bottom of tray. The rice paper is thin and delicate, especially once the glue is applied to the back, so handle with care.

  • Use your finger to accent the edges of the tray with the gold metallic Rub’n’Buff (figure B)

  • Cut glass or plexi-glass to fit inside tray and protect the design.
