Susan Rothamel from USArtQuest uses collage techniques along with dried flowers, napkins, art paper, paint, gilding, cork and/or felt to create elegant glass coasters.

Materials:
four-inch glass squares (hardware stores—get two for each coaster)
fine grain sandpaper
floral napkins
dried flowers or fruit (rubber stamp stores or craft stores)
alcohol-based colored ink
glossy adhesive
gilding adhesive
gilding
fiesta colors
texture sponge
foiling tape
boxwood tool (craft store)

Steps:
1. Lightly sand the sides of the glass squares to remove sharp edges.

2. Choose napkins with floral design and cut out appropriate sections. Remove backing from cutouts, leaving just the top layer of the napkin cutout.

3. Apply napkin cutouts and/or dried flowers or fruits to the back of the top glass square with gloss adhesive and a paintbrush(figure A). Remember to remove the excess layers of napkin.

4. Cover the front side of the back glass square with gilding adhesive and allow adhesive to become tacky.

5. Apply a piece gold leaf gilding to the tacky adhesive and burnish it with a textured sponge. Don't cover the entire piece of glass; it won't matter that there is exposed adhesive.

6. Apply ink to the tacky side of the glass square to fill in remainder of the uncovered surface (figure B).
