Teapots have definitely changed over the past few years, thanks to artists like Jerry Berta, Madeline Kaczmarczyk, and Rosalind and Barry Hage.
Although these individuals testify that teapot art is rewarding and fun, it can also be very challenging, due to the spout, handle and top. Jerry Berta, who is also known for his diner art, loves to make the teapots entertaining, yet functional.
Madeline Kaczmarczyk's teapots are slightly different, and even though she makes a few to actually be used, most people buy them as curios to place in their display cabinet. She incorporates watercolors in her pieces, and rarely glazes, so that her teapots take on a matte rather than shiny finish.
The Hages, a husband and wife teapot-innovating team, secure most of their inspiration while traveling. To them, a teapot should have a lot of "attitude" and "luster", so they sometimes fire their pieces four or five times.
Taped at the 1996 Coconut Grove Festival.
