Sockhopper
Carol Duvall Show : Episode CDS-710 -- More Projects »
Project designed by Anne Jacobs Mooney.
Materials:
one pair of small red-heeled socks
polyester fiberfill stuffing
two buttons or embroidery thread
one white pipe cleaner
pattern (figure A)
Note: Please read all directions and diagram before starting to make Sockhopper.
Steps:
Body
- Cut body from foot of sock #1 so that the brown goes about 2-1/2"beyond the white of heel (which will be the mouth section).
- Stuff. Fold under the open top part and sew tightly together.
Eyes - Remove the white toe section of sock #2, leaving 1/2" of brown attached to white. Cut it in half (where the middle toe would be). Take one half., put a running stitch through the outside edges.
- Put stuffing in the center, pull it into a ball, and sew firmly. This will be an eyeball. Do the same with second half Add buttons or, for very small children, embroider eyes on the white ball.
Front Legs - Fold brown "front leg" material (from sock #1 inside out; seam it, going across one end in a curve. Leave other end open. Fold right side out. Turn open top edge under and sew, then sew the front half of the open top onto the Sockhopper's body, about 1" down from the white mouth.
- Position legs about 1" apart from each other. The open edge is positioned toward the back end of the Sockhopper so fingers can be inserted. Do the same for other leg.
Middle Legs - Cut these from sock #2. Turn inside out and seam, going across one end in a curve and leaving other end open.
- Stuff and fold top edges under neatly. Attach about 1" behind the front legs.
Back Legs - Cut as shown from sock #2; one entire leg is cut on each layer of the sock. Fold one leg in half, inside out. At the area where the leg goes from the thin section to the fat part, you may have to pucker the material on one side to make edges match up. Stitch, sewing across the end of the white "foot."
- Leave other end open. Turn right side out and stuff. Sew open end closed.
- Attach to the body about 1" behind the middle legs. The heavy part of the leg attaches to the lower side of the body and goes up. Approximately 2" into the thin section, bend the leg back down. Sew this bend in place on the body-side of the leg so the sewing is less noticeable. Bend foot backward where the white material begins. To do this, approximately 1/2" after you get into the white, pull it up to the brown line and sew tightly.
Wings - Cut from white cuff material of sock #1. Leave elastic in edge. Turn inside out. Cut and sew into a "W" shape. Turn right side out.
- Sew wings onto the back of the Sockhopper, gathering the bottom half and tacking it down. Leave the bottom half open so fingers can be inserted. Sew wings on where the head ends.
Antennae - Cut white antennae from cuff of sock #2. Cut two 6" pieces of white pipe cleaner. Fold each end of a 6" piece into the middle of itself, and twist tightly together. You'll end up with a 3" long piece without sharp ends. Put a piece inside each antennae.
- Fold in the edges of white material smoothly around the pipe cleaner and sew seam tightly, also sewing the top closed. Fold in bottom edges and attach tightly to the head approximately 1/2" behind the eyes.
The Sockhopper can be "flown" by inserting fingers upside down into the wings. To make Sockhopper walk or hold onto objects, insert fingers into the open front legs.
