With a passion for fashion, a talent for illustration and a degree in graphic design, Carmelita Nunez thought she had her career path all planned out after graduation. But one elective class in ceramics changed her course permanently. Nunez merges her illustration skills with ceramics to create functional, yet unique hand drawn ceramic bowls.

1. Wedge the clay until it is soft. Shape the clay into a ball. Holding the ball in your left hand, plunge your right thumb into the center of the ball. Use the fingers and thumb of your right hand to form the pot by pinching the clay around the edges (figure A). Set it aside to dry for about four hours.

2. Smooth the outside of the clay pot with a paddle (figure B). Burnish the pot so that it is shiny and smooth inside and out using a water buffalo horn.

3. Trim the edges of the bowl with a craft knife (figure C). Shave the edges using a woodworking tool (figure D).

4. Smooth out the bowl using a wet sponge (figure E).

5. Apply eight coats of white under glaze to the inside of the bowl. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.

6. Draw the bunny image onto the pot using a #2 pencil. Fill in the design with under glaze pencils. Smudge the lines a bit for a softer look (figure F).

7. Bisque fire the bowl at 1888 degrees for approximately 7-1/2 hours.

6. Apply a clear, food safe glaze and glaze fire the piece at 1950 degrees for approximately 7-1/2 hours.
