Project by Tu-Anh Nguyen from Alexandria, Va.

When Tu-Anh started to make jewelry, she needed a nice way to display them and she did not like the prop displays in town. A close friend who is a potter inspired her to take it on as a hobby and create displays for herself. In this project, Tu-Anh takes pottery a step further by using glass globs to give her leaf tray an extra bit of interest.

Materials:

porcelain clay
water
rolling pin
large leaf
knife or credit card
paintbrush
glaze
glass globs

Steps:

1. Roll out slab of clay to desired thickness. Wedge and shape the clay to general leaf size.

2. Place leaf on slab and press down to make the leaf impression in the clay. Cut away excess clay around leaf shape using credit card corner.

3. Using the tip of a paintbrush or other small tool, extend lines of leaf veins.

4. Mold to desired smoothness.

5. Fire in kiln. Allow to cool.

6. Paint glaze colors on inside and edges of leaf tray.

7. Place glass globs around inside of tray.

8. Fire in kiln for final firing.
