Guest Michelle Ross designed and demonstrated this project. A set of four tied with a pretty ribbon makes a nice gift!
Materials:
pasta machine
about 2 oz. clay per coaster
tissue blade
4" x 4" paper pattern
craft knife
Y.I. Stamp, Ink! rubber stamp sets #002 and #003 - discontinued
acrylic paint: burnt umber, red oxide and gold
parchment or tracing paper
baby powder
powder brush
Steps:
1. Condition and roll clay to the thickest setting on the pasta machine.
2. With a tissue blade and the paper pattern, cut the shape for the bottom of the coaster (figure A).
3. Brush baby powder on the stamp and stamp it in the remaining clay deep enough to see the outline (figure B).
4. Using the craft knife, cut the stamped design out and smooth the edges as needed (figure C).
5. Arrange the pieces on the bottom shape. You may need to fill in some spaces , so stamp the design again and add selected pieces so there are no large spaces for a cup or glass to slip into (figure D).
6. Place a piece of parchment or tissue paper over the clay and gently press with your fingers to secure the cut out pieces.
7. Bake per package directions.
8. Use the acrylic paint to antique and gild the coasters (figure E).
