Figure D
Host Renai Ellison turns a simple birdbath into a fabulous mosaic work of art that is sure to attract birds to a garden.

Materials:

old pottery and dishes or tile pieces
safety glasses
rubber gloves
tile nippers
hammer
old towel
cement birdbath
tile glue
premixed ceramic-tile adhesive and grout
putty knife
tongue depressor
water sealant

Steps:

  1. To break dishes and tiles into pieces, wrap them in an old towel and tap with a hammer (figure A). Small pieces are easier to handle.

    * Note: Always wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when breaking pottery.

  2. Cover the inside surface of the birdbath with mosaic pieces. Glue to the surface with tile glue (figure B). Let set up well. When working with a concave or convex surface, make sure that the pieces follow a curve.

  3. Follow the package directions to grout the lines between broken mosaic pieces.

  4. Use a tongue depressor or your fingers to push grout into the cracks (figure C). Let dry well, for at least 48 hours.

  5. Clean the surface, then apply water sealant (figure D).
