Figure D
Susan Pickering Rothamel of US ArtQuest demonstrates how to transform an unattractive piece of pottery into a beautiful home accessory (see photo at right).

Materials:

paint
paper adhesive
dry powder pigment paint
paintbrushes
leafing pen
webbing spray
epoxy-coated 24-gauge colored wire (Gold, black, copper and aubergine were used on the show.)
beads, buttons, curtain rings, etc.

Steps:

  1. Pour paint inside the pottery. Use a color that will complement what you use on the outside.

  2. Brush paper adhesive on the outside of the pot (figure A).

  3. Follow immediately by applying dry powder pigment paint (bronze was used on the show) with a brush (figure B). The adhesive seals the pot. Let dry.

  4. If desired, touch up the edges of the pottery with a leafing pen.

  5. Apply webbing spray (figure C) with a back-and-forth motion. Do not spray directly onto the pottery.

  6. Wrap several strands of wire around the neck of the pottery and tie it into a bow of sorts (figure D).

  7. Thread decorative items such as beads, earrings or curtain rings onto wire and twist ends.

* Note: When using webbing spray, use the same color as the paint on the inside of the pot (or use a complementary color).
