Project designed by Donna Kato
Materials:
one package of Fimo polymer clay in each of the following colors: White #0, Translucent #01, Black #9
glass votive candleholder - approx. 3" in height
raw umber acrylic paint
pasta machine or roller
Nublade and Marxit Kato clay tools
1/4" diameter round cutter
Steps:
Conditioning the Clay
- Polymer clay must be conditioned prior to use. The easiest way to condition the polymer clay is to begin by squeezing it on all sides.
- Roll it into a ball, then a snake. Fold it back on itself and roll a snake again. Repeat a few times then roll it into a thick cylinder.
- Cut 1/8" slices and roll through the pasta machine on a thin setting. Roll each slice through and then roll them together two at a time until all the slices have been integrated into the whole.
Faux Bone Clay Slab
- Roll White and Translucent into sheets of 1/16" thickness. Set one sheet atop the other, trim the sides and then roll through again on the same setting of the pasta machine.
- Cut the sheet in half, stack one half atop the other, maintaining the color alternation, and then roll through the pasta machine again. You now have four alternating layers.
- Repeat step 2, two more times until you have a sheet containing 16 layers.
- Cut the sheet in half, and stack. Repeat two more times, then trim the sides of the slab.
- Mix your scraps together and roll into a thin sheet. Wrap the sheet around the candleholder, trimming so that there is no overlapping clay. Ease the clay around the top and the bottom of the votive. Trim the excess from the top and bottom - do not cover the bottom of the candleholder.
- Press the 3mm side of the Marxit Kato across the top surface of the bone slab. Following the marks cut into slices. Roll each slice through the pasta machine to elongate the stripes. Continue rolling through thinner settings until the strip is long enough to cover the votive, top to bottom. Lay each thinned strip on the clay covered votive. Trim, when necessary, removing excess clay.
- Roll a 1/16" thick sheet of Black Fimo. Lay the 5mm side of the Marxit Kato across the sheet and cut into strips. Beginning at the bottom, lay the strips on the votive, encircling the bottom edge of the clay. Working in rows, continue, making 6 rows.
- Place 4 vertical strips from the bottom to the top edge, spacing them evenly around.
- Lay a strip around the top edge then lay another row next to it.
- Cut 4-1/4" discs and place them on the intersections of the vertical strips and the top black rows.
- Roll 2-1/4" diameter balls of black clay and cut them in half. Place half of a ball on each disc. Bake at 265-degrees for 30 minutes. Allow to cool completely before antiquing with burnt umber acrylic paint.
