Asian-Inspired Album

Guest Emi Fukushima brings Asian flair to an everyday album with decorative paper, polymer clay and charms.

Materials:
WireForm mesh
wire (20 and 24 gauge)
assorted beads
Fimo Soft clay
Fimo glaze
burnt umber acrylic paint
wooden album
Kozo paper
handmade paper
rubber stamp
rubber stamp ink for antiquing
white glue
color and black paper
bamboo stick
yarn
Chinese coins
charms

Steps:
1. Paint wooden album (Figure A).

2. Place handmade color paper over cover and glue with white glue.

3. Cut black paper slightly smaller than the piece of color paper applied in step 2 and glue in place (Figure B).

4. Cut Kozo paper a little smaller than the black paper and glue into place (Figure C).

5. "Antique" the album with rubber stamp ink (Figure D).

6. Tear a piece of color or other paper and place under the kimono and dragonfly embellishments for contrast.

Kimono Embellishment
1. Cut the Wireform mesh into a 5" x 7" rectangle. Make a slit two inches from top on both sides about 1-1/2 inches deep.

2. On the other end (bottom), cut a slit three inches from bottom in the center (Figure E).

3. Fold the edges of the entire Wireform mesh.

4. Fold over the sleeves and tie down with wire (cut three equal pieces of wire) (Figure F).

5. Fold over the bottom to form a skirt (Figure G).

Dragonfly Embellishment
1. Cut the Wireform mesh to make two wings (3/4" x 3").

2. Cut "eyelash" yarn to length of wings and glue yarn onto wire mesh wings (Figure I).

3. Condition the Fimo Soft clay and form the dragonfly body. Stack a layer of black and copper and run through the pasta machine on number 3 setting. Stack the layers to make five lines (Figure J). Cut into 2-1/2" x 1/4" slice. Using your thumbnails, press on both sides to make indentations.

4. Form a small ball of black clay for the head.

5. Add two small seed beads for the eyes (Figure K).

6. Place the wings under the body (Figure L) and bake in oven at 275 degrees for 30 minutes.

Faux Ivory Embellishments
1. Condition beige Fimo Soft clay. Flatten to 1/8-inch thickness or the thickest setting on your pasta maker, leaving the edges rough.

2. Rubber stamp an image onto the clay (Figure M).

3. Bake 30 minutes in a 265-degree oven. Allow to cool.

4. Paint cooled clay piece with burnt umber acrylic paint and let dry (Figure N).

5. Sand with 320-, 400-, 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper. Glaze with Fimo glaze.

6. Roll a small piece of black Fimo Soft to 1/8-inch thickness (or thickest setting on the pasta maker). Cut into shape to fit under faux ivory clay (Figure O). Bake 30 minutes in a 265-degree oven. Cool.

Embellishing the Album
1. Place the kimono, dragonfly and faux ivory in desired position.

2. Glue a bamboo (or other stick) to the edge of the album.

3. Hang assorted yarns and tassels from the stick. Glue charms, coins, etc., to cover the album.
