Materials:
Sculpey III in Gold and Black
photocopy of design
oven
Please note: Polymer clay must be conditioned prior to use. To condition, simply knead in your hands until it's soft and pliable or use a pasta machine to feed the clay through until desired thickness. However, it is not recommended to use your pasta machine for food preparation after using it with clay.
Steps for the Checkerboard Canes:
- Roll Black and Gold clay into sheets of 1/4" thickness.
- Place one sheet atop the other and trim edges to match. You should have a rectangle or square at this point.
- Measure 1/4" increments across the top of either side.
- Following the marks and cut into strips. Once cut, put strips back together but reverse direction of every other strip to form checkerboard pattern (Figure A). Make the checkerboard cane 4 up and 4 across.
- Compress the sides by squeezing with fingers to eliminate air pockets. Set aside.
Steps for the Photocopy Transfer:
- Trim the photocopy.
- Roll a sheet of Gold 1/8" thick. Place the photocopy on the clay and trim the clay to desired shape (Figure B).
- Place the cut clay on a sheet of 1/16" thick Black clay, the same size as you cut the Gold. Burnish the photocopy onto the clay with your fingers (Figure C).
- Cut the checkerboard cane into 1/8" thick slices (Figure D). Place the slices side by side around the Gold clay, and trim excess where necessary (Figure E).
- Put a round disk in the clay gun and load it with Black clay. Extrude the strand and place it around the checkerboard (Figure F). Press to adhere.
- Using a sharp blade, trim the Black sheet (Figure G). Smooth the strand and the sheet together.
- Bake in a preheated 275 degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cool. Once cool, remove the paper (Figure H).
Hanger Steps:
The hanger may be embedded into the clay prior to baking or affixed after. Donna uses the plastic coated paper clips and affixes them to the back of the piece after it has been cured. The piece is then cured again to secure the loop.
