Project designed by Linda Bernstein.
Materials:
oxidizing agent
metal clay
olive oil
smooth plastic sheet
deck of cards
small roller
clear plastic wrap
large square Kemper cutter
craft knife
coffee stir
small plastic ruler
bamboo skewer
clay shaper
three- millimeter cast in place
synthetic garnet
embossing gun
soldering pad
nail files or salon boards
kiln
craft brush
paper towel
water
brass brush
polishing cloth
Steps:
1. Lubricate palms of hands with a small amount of olive oil and roll a small block of clay into a ball. Place plastic wrap over the ball and flatten the clay out with a roller (figure A).
2. Move the clay onto a Teflon-coated baking sheet. Draw a design for the pendant onto a piece of acetate and cut out the design to make a template. Center the template onto the clay sheet and cut around the template with a craft knife (figure B).
3. Using a coffee stir, make a small hole in the center of the pendant (figure C).
4. With a small plastic ruler, press lines around the perimeter of the pendant to make a border (figure D).
5. Roll a pea-sized piece of clay into a ball and flatten it slightly. With a coffee stir, make a hole through the center of clay (figure E). Place a small synthetic garnet into the hole (figure F). Fold over the top part of the pendant to create a loop for the chain (figure G).
6. Let the clay dry and file the edges and corners with a nail file (figure H).
7. Place the pendant in a kiln and fire it at 1650 degrees for two hours.
8. Take the pendant out of the kiln and let cool. Brush the surface with a brass brush. Continue rubbing the pendant with polishing paper until it looks silver.
9. With a small paintbrush, coat the pendant with an oxidizing agent so that it turns black. Rub the pendant with polishing paper until it looks silver again, leaving the indentations black.
