Project designed by Barbara McGuire.
Materials:
three silk cords dyed and heat-set in soft desaturated colors (figure A)
Fimo soft glitter (metallic) clay - silver, yellow, blue, and red
Kemper punch cutter circles in diminishing sizes (figure B)
one-inch diameter circle punch
NuBlade clay knife by Kato
acrylic roller or pasta machine
card stock paper for baking
cocktail straw
Steps:
1. Condition and combine colors as follows:
- 1/2 block of gray and 1/16 block of yellow
- 1/4 block of red and 1/4 block of blue (to create purple)
- pea size of purple (created above) and 1/2 block of gray (vary as desired)
2. Roll the clay into a sheet using a #1 thickness on the (Atlas) pasta machine or approximately 1/8 inch thick.
3. Using the one-inch circle punch, punch three gray and two purple circles. Center the 1/2-inch punch inside the circle and punch out another circle of clay (figure C). Rings and circles will be left.
4. Set all the rings aside. Center the 1/4-inch punch inside the remaining circles and punch again, creating another circle and ring set. Center a 1/8-inch punch inside the circle and punch, creating a ring and a dot. Make 10-1/2-inch rings of each color, gray and light purple. Set all pieces aside.
4. Turn the one-inch rings over so that the front is face down. Use a straw to make an indentation for the buckle bar and the cords (figure D). The indentation for the bar is a small dent across the back of the ring, running from top to bottom. The indentation for the cords is a larger dent, which runs perpendicular to the bar. This dent is slightly wider to accommodate the cords.
5. To create the buckle, make a thin snake of the purple about 1/8 inch in diameter. This will become the buckle "bar." Place the buckle bar, across the ring in the small indent (figure E). Press to secure. Trim the bar to extend just past the ring.
6. Flip the buckle over to the front side and place a dot (alternating colors) over the indent for the cords (figure F). Place front side down on card stock paper to bake.
7. To create the toggle headpiece, roll a snake of deep purple 1/4 inch in diameter and split in half lengthwise. Place two lavender dots on each end. Place aside for baking.
8. Make a large ring from a circle cutter (cookie or biscuit) 1-1/2 inch in diameter with a one-inch diameter center punch. Place three gray dots evenly spaced in the center of both the top and bottom of the front of the ring.
9. Bake all the pieces according to the clay manufacturer's instructions.
Necklace assembly
1. Thread all three cords through a green buckle bead so that the bead reaches the center of the cords (figure G). Thread the cords, keeping them in order, through a lavender buckle five inches from center point on each side.
2. Weave the cords with the small 1/2-inch ring beads. Insert the two right cords through a gray ring. Then insert the two left cords thought a lavender ring (figure H). Insert the two right cords through a gray ring. Then insert the two left cords thought a lavender ring. Repeat until there are three lavender beads on the inside and four gray beads on the outside (figure I). Weave the middle cord between the two sets of rings, gray and lavender.
3. Repeat the sequence in step two on the other side of the necklace, using the gray buckle.
4. Thread the two cords from the inside of each side through a lavender ring.
5. Thread four cords (two from each side) through the largest ring, over the half cylinder bar and back through the ring. Hold the bar against the ring by the pressure of the cords. Finish the pieces with a sequence of woven beads. Thread a gray bead to hold the two outside strands on each side of the necklace. Thread a lavender bead to hold together the middle and inside strands on each side. String the inside cords through a purple ring bead.
