Project by Meredith Dittmar of Portland, Ore.
Meredith started making her polymer clay "My Guys" as a creative outlet in college. Everyone loved her adorable creatures so much that 10 years later, she's still sculpting away.
Materials:
Premo polymer clay
oven
clay tools, household implements
Steps:
1. When I make a guy I usually dont have a plan. I just move the clay in my hands until a shape starts coming out. I like to refer to them as three-dimensional doodles because they are very spontaneous. I start with making a body/head piece, then make holes for the eyes with round tools or a pinhead.
2. I then add the eyes by rolling little balls of white, placing them in the holes, and then adding little dots of blue and black to them.
3. Next I make the arms, which have become progressively more lifelike over the years. The arm style is something that changes a lot--huge hands; skinny, little short arms; long ones; etc.
4. After the arms are added, I work on posturing. I start moving the arms and body and head and just see what kind of attitude comes out.
5. After the posturing is done, all thats left is embellishments. Often you need to use wires to reinforce any thin embellishments sticking out like ears, hair, horns, etc.
6. After that I mark the bottom with my tag (which changes so I have an idea of when they were made) and put them in an oven at 325 F degrees for 15 to 20 minutes.
