Though this segment was to be devoted strictly to showing some of the handsome hard cover craft books on the market, we could not resist sharing the words of wisdom that Dee Davis left with me to share with ALL crafters. This is a quote from British writer John Ruskin that says, "All things are literally better, lovelier and more beloved for the imperfections that reflect the human effort that went into their making." What a good thought to keep in mind when we start beating ourselves up over some tiny mistake we have made after spending hours working on something.
All of the books that we shared today had to do with paper . . . although none, other than the book we showed that Dee Davis has written, had anything to do with decoupage. The books all have hard covers and can more likely be found in book stores and libraries rather than most craft stores. All had to do with paper, from making simple projects to decorating or transforming the surface of paper to making and working with handmade paper.
First on the list was one aptly titled Simply Super Paper. The book itself, the projects and everything about it were very clean and uncluttered looking. The projects were mainly of the cut, fold and glue type, and there were patterns for everything in the back of the book. There were paper bookmarks, boxes, party table decorations, etc. Written by Sandra Lounsbury Goose, the book is published by Contemporary Books.
Quite in contrast, although also dealing with paper, is Creative Paper Art - Techniques for Transforming the Surface. The book was written and compiled by Nancy Welch, and includes the work of many different paper artists. Some of the techniques are rather basic (folding and dyeing tissue paper), while others are more involved (marbeling). Along with each technique was a project for using decorated paper. The publisher is Sterling/Chappelle.
Another book about paper is Crafting With Handmade Paper. Published by Rockport Publishing and written by Gail Hercher, it too is a beautiful book with wonderful projects, many of them rather involved and/or time consuming. One that intrigued me was the New Yorker table. Made from corrugated cardboard and New Yorker magazines, it definitely looked like a Linda Watson type of project!
