These books, usually hard cover, are the craft books most often found in book stores rather than craft stores. They are generally more expensive, and usually the projects are more sophisticated than those found in the average craft booklet.

Decoupage by Josephine Whitfield (from the Lorenz "Inspirations" series)

And yet another book entitled Decoupage! Carol's producer, Linda Watson, used a project in the book as an inspiration rather than as something to exactly duplicate. While the book shows a full-sized wooden chair decorated with wildly colored gift wrapping paper, Linda used a doll-sized chair from Walnut Hollow and decorated it with wildly colored tissue paper.

To decide "what goes what," if you're following Linda's example, she suggested starting by selecting paper to cover the largest surface (in this case the seat of the chair) and moving both up and down, choosing papers that have at least one compatible color with the adjacent papers.

As a reminder to those who perhaps have not yet seen or tried the tissue paper application, Carol slathered an acrylic medium on the chair seat then pressed the tissue paper (cut slightly larger than the seat) in place and coated the top surface with the medium as well. After the medium was COMPLETELY dry, she trimmed the paper to fit. This was done on all sections of the chair.

Painting More Animals on Rocks by Lin Welford (North Light Books)

This follow-up to Lin's first book, Painting Animals on Rocks, offers step-by-step photographs to illustrate techniques for obtaining wonderfully realistic paintings on rocks, no matter what their size or shape. Also new is Ms. Welford's book on painting houses and cottages on rocks. On the show, Carol showed a cow painted on a rock that had been done by Julie Watson, Linda's mother.

Make it With Paper Series by Michael LaFosse, Paul Jackson (Rockport Publishers)

An entire series covers a wide spectrum of paper projects explained by Michael LaFosse and Paul Jackson. Included in the series are Paper Pop-Ups, Paper Animals, Paper Boxes and Paper Flowers. What makes these books unique is that they not only have clearly written step-by-step directions with illustrations and photographs, but included in the backs of the books are actual colored cut-outs for making some of the projects. In addition, templates are included for making more of your own projects later. The back cover features an envelope flap to keep everything together.

The Contemporary Craft of Papier Mache by Helen Meyer (Lark Books)

Another book on papier mache joins the long list of books already out there on the subject, but this book truly gives a new look to this old crafting favorite. From Lark Books, the projects are truly elegant and very, very unlike the usual papier mache look.

Creating with Polymer Clay by Steven Ford, Leslie Dierks and New Ways with Polymer Clay by Helga Meyer

More on polymer clay as well, this time in two greatly diverse books. The first shows very sophisticated and very advanced designs and objects made with this versatile medium. The second features projects that are more folksy and cute. Each reference presents different techniques for creating unique clay pieces.

The Tile Decorating Book by Marion Elliot

This book shows how to decorate tiles and how to decorate WITH tiles. Included are patterns that can be traced and painted with any of the new ceramic paints currently available in your craft stores.

Stringwork (from the Lorenz Books New Crafts series)

Among the most recent additions to the series. From England, these books frequently contain projects that may use the same methods as those used in the United States, but the "look" is different.

The project Carol selected to highlight from the book was one that featured lampshades that had been enhanced by adding string or twine to their surface. One shade was decorated by applying a strand of glue to the surface in a loose "scribble" design and then covering it with twine. Another used twine to outline the bottom edge.

Old or new shades can be used. Carol used a new shade from Hollywood Lights that has a peel-off pattern and an adhesive surface, and she covered it with handmade paper from Loose Ends as follows:
  1. Peel off the pattern and trace it onto handmade paper.
  2. Cut out the pattern and place it on the shade.
  3. Punch a hole near the bottom edge of the shade near the seam. Place a clip clothespin next to the hole and punch another hole on the other side of the pin. Repeat around bottom edge. Use the clothespin to keep the holes all an equal distance apart.
  4. Using string, twine or rope of your choice, thread the twine in an overhand stitch through the holes around the base. Secure at each end with glue.
