On a whim four years ago, John Crawford decided to make a house for the garden fairies that had honored him with a flourishing garden. A friend saw that house, wanted one, and the concept grew from there. Since then, his fairy homes have become quite an adventure unto themselves. John has been having fun with it since the first day and welcomes the opportunity to continue creating this wonderful real estate.

John starts with stones, sand, twigs and other materials gathered in any number of places. Recently he has collected twigs from a garden in San Francisco after a storm, an Indian reservation in New Mexico, and the Hudson River Valley. Those twigs determine the shape of the walls of the house. John uses sand, stones, ground marble and hot glue to complete the walls, and regular roof shingles that have been split with a meat cleaver to create the roof. The process is one of layering natural materials with adhesives, but no iron nails are used--fairies don't approve of iron.

John says that his structures are about letting nature determine the free form of the structure, but you must have precision where it counts. All of the doors work, and the house is made to resist weather. They can be kept in the garden as an offering to fairies or inside the home as a lovely decoration. No matter where the house is kept, it adds an element of fun and whimsy to your environment.
