Figure A--The work of Wini McQueen suggests many labels. She's a painter, a writer, at times a photographer, a social activist--she is even an historian. One of her quilts, Ode to Edmund, is part of the permanent collection at the High Museum in Atlanta, Georgia. Her art results in magnificent story quilts that touch on a wide range of subjects and issues.

Figure B--McQueen hand-dyes and colors each piece of fabric used in her quilts. Her work takes inspiration from quilting techniques that are practiced in Africa--techniques she has studied firsthand in several trips to that continent and quilt-making practices she is determined to preserve. This quilt pays tribute to the work of Robert Scott Duncanson, the first African-American artist to receive international acclaim.
