Glass Artist

Modern Masters : Episode MAS-602 -- More Projects »
John Hamm may live in the midst of a modern metropolis, but his heart is in the past. He makes arts-and-crafts-style stained-glass windows and lamps with techniques that were developed by Charles and Henry Greene. He also acknowledges being inspired by legendary glass craftsman Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Hamm got his start more than 20 years ago, and his first glasswork pieces were Tiffany-inspired floral lampshades.

How it Works

  • Creating the glass pieces is highly detailed work, particularly forming the multiple curves and shapes. Hamm has to carefully trim the glass pieces a little bit at a time. If he tries to cut away too large a chunk of glass, the piece could shatter.

  • After cutting out 50 or more pieces of leaded glass, Hamm goes to work with copper foil and a soldering iron to complete his artwork.

  • Hd has to work carefully but quickly when soldering. The soldering iron emits 900 degrees of concentrated heat, and if held against the glass too long, the pieces could shatter.
