Modern Masters : Episode MAS-503 -- More Projects »
Birger Juell just loves it when people say, "Wow!" about one of his custom floors. The native-born Norwegian had dreams of becoming a sea captain, but that goal was set aside when he was floored by the deck of a schooner. Sixty-five years ago, his job was to scrape the deck of a ship, and he was captivated by the beauty he uncovered there.

He's still uncovering beauty in unlikely places. One of his signature floor treatments is a cobblewood floor that he achieves by crosscutting old wooden beams before giving them a high gloss.

Another one of Juell's specialties is parquet flooring. This technique is one of the oldest types of decorative flooring. It is created by positioning small pieces of wood into geometric patterns, which makes it easy to glue down. The Palace of Versailles in France has parquet flooring.
