Stone Carver: Francis Acitelli

Modern Masters : Episode MAS-411 -- More Projects »
Francis Acitelli has been working with stone for half a century. It's a tradition that goes back for generations in the Acitelli family--so far back that no one knows for sure when the tradition actually started. He does know that his father's grandfather was a stone mason, and he creates fireplaces from limestone with an air compressor and a series of chisels and gouges.

How it Works

Stone carvers use mostly steel chisels to create their works. Tools called pitchers knock off corners of stone blocks. Tooth-edged chisels remove stone in small particles, allowing for a smooth surface. Flat chisels finish the surface.
