Metalsmith: Robert Oney

Modern Masters : Episode MAS-406 -- More Projects »
Robert Oney once dreamed of being a drummer, but today he is banging out a different tune. Taking up the tools and trade of a metalsmith, he's following in the footsteps of his great-great grandfather.

The family business started in the 1880s, providing storm shutters for folks. Today Oney specializes in creating custom copper and steel-range hoods that are the focal point of stylish kitchens throughout Florida. He works with his father, uncle and even his son.

History Nugget

Copper is one of the earliest metals to be used by man. At first its pliability made it useful only for coins and decorative items, but once other metals or alloys were added, it became even more popular. It has been used for centuries in the kitchen, for everything from pots, pans and cooking utensils to range hoods.
