Kendra Haskell, of South Portland, Maine, is the first to admit she has a big head. But she doesn’t mean a "swollen ego;" she’s speaking strictly in the literal sense. Since she was never able to find stylish hats to fit her crown, it was out of necessity that she started creating her own. Combining her art school skills with her love of fashion, Kendra came up with her own collection of chic hats, each of which tells a story with their imagery, like her "walking the dog in the Portland outdoors" hat.

Materials:

wool suiting fabric
wool and acrylic felt
polyester fleece
ribbon
vintage buttons
embroidery floss (to sew on the buttons)
cotton broadcloth or flannel (lining)

Steps:

1. Lay out the paper pattern for the body and crown of the hat on wool cloth (figure A).

2. Pin the pattern on the wool and cut out the hat pieces.

3. Lay the appliqué patterns onto various fabrics (felt, fleece etc.) and cut out a dog, bird, flowers and stars (figure B).

4. Pin the various appliqués onto the hat and crown.

5. Stitch the appliqués (figure C) using a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine. Zigzag stitch with contrasting color thread (figure D) as desired.

6. Pin the two short ends of the hatband, with right sides together, and stitch the seam using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Press the seam open.

7. Pin the crown piece to the body or band piece with right sides together (figure E).

8. Stitch the band to the crown on the sewing machine.

9. Turn the hat right side out.

10. Turn under the bottom edge 1/4 inch and stitch.
