  • Start a thread at the edge of the bead-embroidered piece.
  • Sew from back to front making a very small stitch through the interfacing and leather edge.
  • Pick up three seed beads and stretch the bead thread along the line where the beads will go.
  • Make another stitch through the interfacing and leather edge just after the third bead.
  • Sew back through the third bead to form a picot.
  • Pick up two beads and stitch through the interfacing and leather at the edge of the next picot.
  • Go back through the last bead added (as before).
  • Continue beading around the entire piece until you meet the first picot.
  • Add one bead and go through the existing (first) bead to make the final picot (figure H).

13. Add festoons to bead-embroidered piece. Making festoons:

  • Start a thread in the desired location coming out through one of the secure beads of a picot.
  • String enough beads to reach the end point of the festoon and sew through the secure bead of the closest picot.
  • To double the strand, repeat steps ending the second strand at the starting point of the first.
  • Add more beads to the second festoon so that it dangles lower than the strand above (figure I).

  • String a bead onto a head or eye pin.
  • Place the tip of chain nose pliers against the bead.
  • With round nose pliers, grasp the tail just past the bend and pull it over the jaw to point the other way.
  • Grasp the tail with chain nose pliers to pull it around the wire until it meets the bead (figure K).
  • Make the first wrap against the pliers to form a closed loop.
  • Snip excess wire with wire cutters.
