Designer's Notes

In 1240, when privacy was nonexistent, Henry III of England commissioned the first king-sized bed, an unforgettable lit a colones, or four-poster, with painted canopy. Heavy curtains protected him from draughts plus screened him from servants passing through his chambers. Today, fabrics from Brilliant, USA and Nancy Corzine turn a spacious master suite into an intimate space worthy of the bed from Murray's Iron Works. © Gibbs Smith, Allure of French & Italian Design, Betty Lou Phillips
