Designer's Notes

Dwellings in the French capital flaunt layered lighting—brilliant crystal chandeliers, lamps and wall sconces along with flattering candlelight. Generally, lamps do not match, but they do finish at the same height. The iron chandelier pictured is nineteenth-century French with rare rock crystal jeweled drops and rock crystal bobeches (cups beneath the light sleeves, once used to catch wax from dripping candles). An eighteenth-century Swedish trunk from Tara Shaw Antiques, New Orleans, serves as a coffee table. © Gibbs Smith, Allure of French & Italian Design, Betty Lou Phillips
