Garden-Style Home
Kitty Bartholomew: You're Home : Episode KIT-1004 -- More Projects »
Kitty Bartholomew visits with homeowner Jodi Hanaan, who looked to her beautiful backyard garden for inspiration when decorating the interior of her home. Here are some of the ways she has brought the outdoors inside:
- In the living room, the salmon-colored background on the floral chintz fabric used on the sofa echoes the brick tile on the outdoor patio floor (figure A).
- She covered the old stucco walls surrounding the fireplace with new cedar planks and aged the wood with a five-to-one mixture of spackle and water. Framing the actual fireplace are European tiles that bring an Old World look to the space.
- The dining room features dark wood furniture against a neutral background. Chairs have been slipcovered with a light green floral-textured fabric. Live ivy placed in the center of the chandelier cascades down toward the table.
- Custom floral-painted tiles and standard white tiles make up the kitchen countertop and adorn the backsplash behind the stove (figure B). Hanaan used a honey-colored grout to once again echo the brick used outside. She textured the walls and ceiling with a straw -and-spackle mixture for a French Country look (figure C).
- In the family room, a blue-turquoise colored chintz covers the sofas. The TV is hidden in a painted dollhouse cabinet and a handpainted buffet provides storage for dinnerware and crystal.
- The French Country look continues in the master bedroom where a wall of windows allows the sunlight to stream in. Various fabrics, like the lace curtains, blue toile used in the bedding and the sky-like fabric covering the pillows all contribute to the garden theme. A coat of mango-colored paint covers the wall of mirrored closet doors.
- Hanaan says the guestroom was a challenge since it's the only room in the house that doesn't receive much sunlight. She continued the garden theme with a botanical rug, houseplants and cabinet doors painted to match the fence outside (figure D).
- The bathroom walls feature a paper that looks like aged concrete blocks with flowers peeking through the cracks (figure E). A valance houses the shower curtain (figure F) and a watering can functions as a lamp.
