About the Bathroom
Interior designer Vern Yip chose to cover surfaces, floor to ceiling, with Ann Sacks glass tile that would reflect light from the far window back into the space. Stylish furnishings provide ample space for storage while contributing to the space's clean, modern aesthetic. \"I wanted that bathroom to feel really spa-like and peaceful,\" he says.
A wall-hung vanity saves space and exudes style. The cabinet's rich wood graining and antique walnut finish serve as a foil to sleek, modern surfaces.
Two pivoting doors swivel open to reveal two shelves of storage space, the perfect place to stow toiletries, haircare products and medicine.
An elliptical lavatory in crisp white features rounded edges and a shallow basin, giving the bathroom a customized spa feel.
Simple and geometric in design, the polished chrome faucet projects from the wall rather than the sink. \"It adds an extra air of elegance to the bathroom,\" says Vern.
With dark wood sides, the mirrored cabinet lends richness to the room while providing several shelves of storage space and a power outlet. \"There's plenty of space for blowing hair dry or putting on your makeup or whatever it is that you need to do,\" says Vern. \"Everything is there, it's just hidden.\"
\"It's this perfect little oval sculpture that sits on the floor and I love that,\" says Vern of the hatbox-shaped, space-saving tankless toilet. \"It's so elegant looking.\"
Taupe-gray marble tile from Ann Sacks, laid in a classic herringbone pattern, pulls the individual elements of the bathroom together, says Vern.
Resting atop a custom-built pedestal, a white porcelain figure caught Vern's eye before he began design plans for HGTV Urban Oasis. Swimmer, sculpted by José Santaeulalia for Spanish porcelain manufacturer Lladro, seems to spring from the Hudson River into the bathroom space. \"The bathroom is oftentimes a place where people are nervous about putting art because of the humidity and the dampness,\" says Vern. \"This is a perfect solution.\"
A wall sconce adds ambiance. Glass pebbles that fill the clear glass votive holder serve as a nest for a tall white pillar candle.
A clear glass shelf displays a series of silver bowls. Each bowl holds a bar of luxury soap nestled atop a bed of bath salts – a single spa serving for each guest.
The single-function showerhead features a polished chrome finish and geometric styling in keeping with the bathroom's other spa-style fixtures.
The simple lines and polished chrome finish of shower valves don't distract from white glass tile placed on the farthest wall from the window to brighten the space.
Corner-installed shower baskets corral soaps, washcloths and other shower necessities. Solid stainless steel construction guarantees resistance to corrosion.
A rain showerhead turns the glass-enclosed shower into a spa-like experience.
Pairing polished chrome and sparkling glass in warm tones elevates the bathroom design. \"I wanted the bathroom to feel modern, but I also wanted it to feel warm, and that's what the color palette does,\" says Vern.
Two black-and-white photographs, taken by Vern, add drama in the space. \"They were part of my initial research in New York for Urban Oasis,\" he says. \"One's taken inside the Met and the other is taken inside a retail store. It's a perfect example to me of how New York is filled with great stuff: old stuff, new stuff and everything in between. It's the reason I love the city. It celebrates diversity. It celebrates creativity. It's just a really rich place to live and to experience.\"
