California-Style Outdoor Spaces by Jamie Durie

Landscape designer Jamie Durie took inspiration from gardens and architecture in Los Angeles, Ojai and Palm Springs to create these beautiful outdoor rooms.

  • Jamie took ideas he gleaned from the green movement in Los Angeles to create a living wall for a new pergola. Irrigation tubes line the wall, which is packed with vegetables, herbs and perennials. The roof is a mixture of grasses and agave. — Image courtesy of jamiedurie.com

  • In the same Los Angeles-inspired makeover, Jamie terraced the yard and added an attractive lounging area just outside the door. — Image courtesy of jamiedurie.com

  • A visit to Palm Springs gave Jamie ideas for this poolside makeover, including the use of tropical palms, cactus and drought-tolerant plants, plus red tile and natural stone. The new poolside benches function as a fix for a crumbling retainer wall. — Image courtesy of jamiedurie.com

  • The serene gardens and architecture of Ojai, Cal., were the inspiration for this beautiful meditation area. The area is partially enclosed with rope and rocks. — Image courtesy of jamiedurie.com

  • Spanish arches serve as an elegant \"wall\" for this stylish Santa-Barbara-inspired outdoor room.
