You'll need the felt pattern, the lining pattern, the felt flap pattern and the lining flap pattern. These instructions are for the iPad-sized case. The iPad mini and iPhone cases follow the same instructions.

Materials Needed:

  • 1/2 yard of felt
  • 1/2 yard of lining fabric
  • 1/4 yard of cording
  • matching sewing thread
  • scissors
  • sewing machine
  • quilting ruler

Cut Fabric

Download then cut out the patterns you plan to use. Layer two pieces of felt and the felt pattern (Image 1) then use the quilting ruler as a straight edge and follow the pattern to cut out the felt (Image 2).

Layer two pieces of the lining fabric with the pattern on top (Image 3).

Line up the quilting ruler with the pattern then use a rotary cutter to cut out (Image 4).

Also, cut one piece of felt using the felt flap pattern and one piece of lining fabric using the lining flap pattern.

Assembly Part 1

With the right-side-down, iron a 1/4" hem on each side of the lining fabrics and the lining flap piece (Image 1).

Pin the wrong side of the lining flap piece to the felt flap piece. The ironed-over edges should match with the edges of the felt. Stick 2" of the cording between the lining fabric and the felt and pin it in place (Image 2).

Sew the fabric and the felt together 1/8" from the edge (Image 3).

Place the flap that you just made 1/4" down from the edge of the top of one of the felt pieces. The cording should be at the top (Image 4).

Place a lining piece over the flap and felt. The edges should already be ironed under 1/4". The edges of the lining fabric should line up with the edges of the felt. Pin across the top edge (Image 5).

Assembly Part 2

Sew the top 1/8" from the edge of the felt (Image 1).

Pin the other lining piece and felt piece together along one short edge. Sew together 1/8" from the edge along one short side only — this is the top (Image 2).

With the linings together, match the top edges of the felt pieces (Image 3).

Pin along the sides and the bottom, matching up the felt and lining pieces as you go (Image 4).

Sew the case together along the sides and the bottom 1/8" from the edge of the felt (Image 5). Leave the top open to place in your ipad.

Finishing Touches

Mark the button on the center front of the case (Image 1).

Sew the button on (Image 2). The case closes by folding down the flap and wrapping the cording around the button.

Experiment with different colors of felt, fun lining fabrics and interesting buttons (Image 3).
