Make a Festive Monogrammed Doormat
Bring holiday cheer to every part of the home, including the outdoor entry, by making a personalized doormat. To create this project you'll need: a solid, natural doormat; spray paint; spray polyurethane; cardboard; a utility knife; measuring tape; a pencil; paper; vinyl; wood or fabric monogram letters; and painter's tape.
Cut Cardboard to Size
Place doormat directly on top of cardboard. Use a pencil to trace entire perimeter of the doormat to cardboard, then cut out shape with a utility knife.
Sketch design ideas for the doormat onto paper.
Measure, Position and Mark Monogram
Use a measuring tape to determine the center point of the doormat stencil. Mark this point with a pencil.
Place monogram letter directly onto the mark and trace.
Mark and Cut Tree Silhouettes
Trace two or three different-sized triangular Christmas tree silhouettes onto raw cardboard. Next, cut to size using a utility knife. Then place triangles onto the doormat stencil and trace. Use a utility knife to cut silhouettes from doormat stencil.
Tape Stencil to Edges of Doormat
Use painter's tape to securely fasten stencil to the doormat.
Apply Spray Paint
Holding spray-paint can approximately eight inches from surface of the doormat, lightly press tip of the depressor in a steady, controlled manner. Wait approximately two hours until paint is dry to the touch, then add a second coat of spray paint.
Remove Stencil, Then Seal
Once second coat of spray paint is dry to the touch, seal paint with a sprayed coat of polyurethane. Allow doormat to dry outdoors overnight.
Once the doormat is dry, it's ready to be displayed outside the door and used by guests throughout the season.
