How to Make Gold Chain Curtain Tiebacks

Spray-paint heavyweight chain to create edgy yet elegant tiebacks for your window treatments.

Brian Patrick Flynn, Decor Demon

Materials Needed:

  • heavyweight metal chain
  • bolt cutters
  • gold spray paint
  • C-hooks
  • drapery panel
  • measuring tape or tailor's tape
  • notepad
  • pencil

Cut Chain to Size

Bunch drapery panel, then use measuring tape to determine diameter. Referring to this measurement, cut chain to size using bolt cutters.

Add Spray Paint

In a well-ventilated area, add gold spray paint to chain by moving back and forth in a slow, controlled manner with spray can held approximately 8 inches from the surface of the chain. Allow at least 30 minutes for spray paint to dry, then apply a second coat.

Attach C-Hook to Wall

Determine the proper height along the wall for holding back drapery panel using measuring tape, pencil and notepad. Referring to this measurement, add C-hook to wall by screwing tightly in place with hand.

Attach Top End of Chain

Once C-hook is securely in place, pull drapery panel back, then attach the top end of the chain to C-hook.

Attach Bottom End of Chain

Wrap chain around pulled-back drapery panel, attaching it to C-hook directly on top of top end of chain. Adjust drapery panel as needed for a perfect fit.
