Ornamental Shadow-Box Display

Designer Donna Moss shows how to get lasting enjoyment out of personal mementos, keepsakes or other decorative items by creating a distinctive shadow-box wall hanging.

Materials Needed:

  • shadow box
  • decorative items or mementos
  • decorative paper (printable paper optional)
  • extra-strength adhesive glue

Select Shadow Box Contents

Here's a way to create a unique and personal piece of wall art using an inexpensive shadow box you can pick up at any hobby store. Begin with a blank shadow box, some decorative paper and trim, and any personal items you'd like to display inside the box.

Line the Back of the Box

For a backdrop, this piece makes use of decorative wallpaper cut to fit the bottom of the box. Create or print a design that's to your liking. It could be an attractive graphic or a favorite saying or poem. This one is designed to look like a restaurant menu (Image 1). Line the inside of the box with decorative paper (Image 2).

Arrange the Contents

In keeping with the restaurant theme, the objects in this shadow-box design include antique silverware. Determine how you want the items arranged and do a dry fit.

Secure the Box Contents

Glue decorative rope liner into the corners to cover the seams, then accessorize the box by gluing in the objects you've chosen. Be certain to use a good adhesive glue that's rated for the materials you are gluing.

The Assembled Shadow Box

Once the glue has dried and the items are secured within the box, install the glass top. You now have a work of decorative art that you've customized with your own signature style.
