Edible Handmade Bird Decorations

To encourage birds into your yard, hang homemade birdseed balls from trees and shrubs. The birds rely on these additional sources of nutrients if natural foods are scarce and in severe winter weather.

Materials Needed:

  • 18 oz. lard
  • 3 1/2 oz. coarse oats
  • 3 1/2 oz. nuts — peanuts are a good choice
  • 3 1/2 oz. dried fruits
  • 3 1/2 oz. seeds — sunflower seeds are the best choice
  • garden wire
  • old tennis ball or similar, sliced in half and with a small round hole cut out of the top, then resealed by wrapping a length of wire around the ball and twisting the wire ends together securely
  • garden string

Step 1

Put the lard into a saucepan and melt it gently over a low heat. While the lard is melting, mix the dry ingredients together.

Step 2

Add handfuls of the dry food to the melted lard and mix them together. The dry ingredients should all be well coated in the lard.

Step 3

Insert a piece of wire, which is a little longer than the mold, down through the center of the mold. Pack the seed mix in around the wire. Tip: Use a recycled glass tumbler as a mold if you don’t have an old tennis ball.

Step 4

Leave the seed mix in the molds to cool completely, then remove the molds, attach string to the wires, and hang the decorations up high.
