Crayon-Resist Journal Cover

This journal cover is made from fabric textured with crayons and dye.

Dawn Shute of Santa Maria, California, textures muslin fabric with crayons to create this crayon resist journal.

Materials and Tools:

piece of pre-washed muslin
crayon
fabric dye
spray bottle
water
texture boards
paintbrush
newsprint
iron and ironing board
soft gel matte medium
journal

Steps:

1. Pre wash the muslin fabric. Tear the muslin to a size a little bit smaller than the front of the journal. Remove any stray pieces of thread.

2. Place the muslin fabric over selected texture boards. Rub firmly with a crayon to produce the impression on the muslin fabric (figure A).

Continue rubbing crayon in the desired areas of the fabric until you are satisfied with the fabric design (figure B).

3. Spritz the fabric with water. Fabric should be slightly wet--not saturated.

4. Paint the fabric with selected fabric dye, letting the colors bleed together (figure C).

5. Let dry.

6. Place the fabric between two pieces of newsprint and iron—set on high with no steam (figure D). This resist process removes the crayon wax from the fabric.

7. Coat the journal cover with soft gel matte medium.

8. Place the fabric down at one end of the journal and compress it onto the journal cover working from the bottom to the top. Smooth out any air bubbles with your hands (figure E). Let dry.
