Cushioned Window Bench and Bookshelf

How to expand an existing window seat and add handy shelves beneath

Cushions top off this combination window seat and bookshelf, making for the perfect reading spot. Here’s how to build it:

Materials and Tools:

safety glasses
nail gun
miter saw
staining brush
drill
sewing machine
birch plywood sheets
espresso wood stain
nails
screws
foam
cotton batting
thread

Steps:

1. Wearing protective eyewear, build two separate box frames, nailing together the sides, tops and bottoms of the boxes with a nail gun. Fix a back panel on the box frames by using carpenter’s glue and a nail gun.

2. Make sure the frames are level with the existing window seat and fix them in place using a drill.

3. Add the accent panels to the window seat using a nail gun, and create a small lip on the edge of the seat so the cushion stays in place.

4. To make three cushions for the window bench, cut the foam to size, cover it with cotton batting. Fold the batting and then pin it. Sew along the edges to create a seam, and place the cushions on the bench.
