How to Transform a Sad Seat

Garish fabric and nothing-special wood legs looked so dated on this chair, so green ikat-style upholstery was chosen, set off by high-gloss cream paint. Firm foam filling was added to the seat and back for extra comfort.
Road to Recovery
Wool, poly blends and cotton fabric will last longer than silk and linen. Fabric: Flame Stitch Green by Duralee, $45.50 per yard, insidefabric.com Paint: Mother of Pearl high-gloss latex by Olympic
Not Your Grandmother's Chair
This wingback chair's dusty, granny-style floral fabric had to go. Did you know that your upholsterer can also make new pillows and refinish wood arms and legs?
Save the Seat
Two-tone upholstery (navy linen on the seat cushion and seat back, and a modern persimmon and navy branch pattern on the frame) was used and antique-brass-finish nail heads were added as trim. Boring and Blah
The curvy legs on this slipper chair were extremely outdated. And that drab fabric? It wore out its welcome decades ago.
Punched Up and Revamped
Multicolored stripe with matching piping was swapped in, which made for a cheery complement to the new plumped-up seat cushion and chunky walnut legs on casters. If you're feeling fickle about fabric, buy one yard and drape it over the chair to help you decide if it's a keeper. Fabric: Complex Jewel by RM Coco, $29 per yard, insidefabric.com; Legs: Carved walnut with brass caster, $32 each, diyupholsterysupply.com
Old-fashioned skirted plaid and a too-squishy seat made this chair ripe for a redo. You may be able to negotiate a discount with your upholsterer if he or she is working on two or more projects at once.
To give the piece a sophisticated look, we lost the skirt and upholstered the chair in a gray-and-white trellis-pattern fabric. Raspberry piping highlights the boxier shape of the updated cushions.
