Run My Makeover 101: Basement Family Room

Browse before photos of the Van Beke's basement family room. Currently a catch-all for the family, they'd like it transformed into a stylish space for entertaining.

Meet homeowners Chris and Jill Van Beke whose basement is in need of your makeover help. They hope America will incorporate a contemporary, eclectic style into their remodeled family room.

This room serves many purposes: pass-through from the garage to the upstairs, play area for the kids and home gym.

Although spacious, their 300-square-foot basement has become an anything-goes space.

The Van Bekes like the substantial exposed wood beams and want these to be incorporated into the room's new design. They're less fond of the ineffective lighting and need a better option for illuminating the dark room.

The homeowners are ready to see the grasscloth wallpaper and chunky chair rail retired.

The fireplace should be a focal point but is not being maximized. With storage space at a minimum, custom built-ins may be the way to go.
