Over-the-Top Design Budgets

Top designers sent us their most expensive projects. From a rock legend's living room to a SoCal pool that costs more than your mortgage, the budgets for these designs will blow your mind.

  • Parisian Salon

This grand living room was once full of dark, heavy woodwork that made its large scale even more uninviting. Designer Cindy Aplanalp was challenged with a room that needed to be a comfortable family space and a chic spot for entertaining. The plush furnishings and silk window coverings softened the space with rich textures, while a much lighter paint color created an inviting retreat. Total cost of this Francophile update? $46,000.

  • Extravagant Entryway

In this entryway, designer Nicole Sassaman chose to create a high bookshelf to give a blank space a focal point. A rolling ladder is both fun and functional. Luxe touches like stone walls and walnut floors brought the total cost of this entryway to $200,000.

  • Party All the Time

This gorgeous outdoor room from Scott Cohen features a fire pit, inground pool, covered area for entertaining and plenty of light for nightime parties. The final tab for this Mission-style design was $925,000.

  • Modern Money

Pricey rooms don't have to include gold leaf and animal skins. SPI Design made this Hollywood Hills living room feel urban yet comfortable. A monochromatic palette is punched up with a pink painting and two burgundy leather Plaza Ottomans. The total cost of this room topped at $200,000.

  • Record Holding Room

This Malibu recording studio includes every top-of-the-line recording device and piece of musical equipment a rock star could desire. The floors are a gray-stained white oak and the walls are covered in three different earth-toned colors of fabric for soundproofing. There are nooks in the wall to store a partial guitar collection, as well as to create a very cool look and lighting effect. The final cost of this musician's dream was $1.2 million.

  • DeLeon traditional entryway

    Traditional Values

A giant, custom chandelier coupled with an ornate chocolate brown staircase greets guests in this traditional entryway. Second-story wainscoting is an unexpected and extravagant touch in this room from Vanessa DeLeon. Photography by Stephen Garey. Price undisclosed.

  • A Very Good Year

For a $100,000 price tag, Nicole Sassaman turned an old coat closet into a clever wine cellar. She replaced all of the drywall with walnut, glass and steel. The staircase has been opened up, and the old cupboard is no longer a forgotten and under-utilized space.

  • Style Hall of Fame

Designer Genoveve Serge created this wild living room for rock 'n' roll legend Otis Williams of The Temptations. She filled it with his favorite shades of purple, silver and black. Total cost of this legendary space was $150,000.

  • Pricey Pool

Landscape designer Scott Cohen transformed this Calabasas, Calif., backyard into a glamorous retreat. A tiled infinity pool and custom ironwork pavilion gave this backyard project an $890,000 price tag.

  • DeLeon living room window treatment

    Royal Residence

Vanessa DeLeon chose sumptuous fabric, rich jewel tones and plenty of gold to create a living room worthy of a king. Photography by Stephen Garey. Price undisclosed.

  • Tons of Fun

SPI Design had this solid-stone, oversized tub custom made in France. The three-ton tub had to be lowered into the bathroom with a crane via the skylight. The cost of a custom tub and a bathroom built to complement it? $100,000.

  • Art House

This modern living room and bar comes from b + g design. The design team mixed wood, glass, steel and concrete to create a room that is not only stylish, but also comfortable and personal to the client. The tab for the bar and living room came to $142,000.
