Judges' Tips: The White Room Challenge

Renowned interior designers and HGTV hosts Genevieve Gorder, Candice Olson and Vern Yip offer their exclusive design tips from the Design Star set.

  • The apple is the driving force behind Dan's design, and his deconstruction of an orchard receives rave reviews from the judges.
  • Nathan blows the judges away with his capiz-style chandelier made of orange slices and a textural wall treatment of black paint and stripes created by squirting milk down the walls.
  • Torie uses charcoal and puffed rice cereal to create a zebra-print rug and designs a scrollwork-inspired focal point with floral napkins and black trash bags.
  • Antonio pays tribute to Design Star with his color choices. While his paint design is interesting and creates a focal point, the judges feel he didn't embrace the challenge of using the groceries creativity.
  • A color palette of turquoise and yellow is a pretty combination; however, Jany's design falls flat when she plays it safe with the accessories and overall decor.
  • A color palette of lime green, black and white is contemporary, but Tashica's design is predictable and reminds the judges of Robb Mariani's white room in season two.
  • Lonni's initial design plan falls flat when she can't get plastic cups to stick to the wall. Her citrus-inspired color palette is highlighted by green apples and an area rug made of noodles.
  • The matzo cracker plays the center role in Jason's white room design. A bold yellow on the walls doesn't keep this space from feeling bland though.
  • Jen creates an eco-inspired space with Japanese influences. The judges feel her design needed a wow factor and are confused by the chosen color palette.
