Before: Contemporary LoftHost Joan Steffend and designer Richard Anderson transform an urban loft into a winter garden using snowy sophistication and bold pops of color.
After: A Modern ChristmasThe Tree: Collapsible Christmas Tree, Nontraditional Ornaments
First they create a collapsible Christmas tree by using floral rings covered in white garland. The tree stand is a wastebasket covered in stainless-steel self-adhesive paper. Then they use craft-store butterflies glued to clothespins, feathered glass ornaments, spirals of colored wire and silver thread sandwiched between tiny craft mirrors to decorate. The tree topper is an old drapery finial.
Pops of ColorAn unexpected color palette (turquoise, brown, white and apple green) gives the room an updated and unexpected mod feel to Christmas.
Mod MantelThe Living Room: Holiday Card Display, Snowflakes in the Window, Embellished Candleholders
A white feather boa is used in place of a traditional garland. Then, they use a 2x4 with aluminum wire for a hip, industrial greeting card display.
Funky StockingsFun, funky stockings are hung from the mantel.
Winter WonderlandPlastic snowflakes have rhinestones added and are strung from a shower curtain rod in front of the windows for a twinkling nighttime display.
Cool CandlescapeThey cut "jelly" place mats into squares and glue snowflake sequins on them to fashion instant holiday coasters. Then they take card stock and stitch it on a sewing machine and wrap it around glass cylinders to use as vases or for candlescapes.
Creative CandelierThe Dining Room: Pretty Place Settings, Candelier
The mod holiday motif continues in the dining room. First Anderson and Steffend create a "candelier" by putting votives in rose bowls and hanging mini craft mirrors for sparkle.
Modern Holiday Dining RoomThen, they use larger mirrors on the table as charger plates. Two place mats sewn together on three sides become instant chair shrugs. Silk flowers glued into boutonniere holders become festive napkin rings. Glass cylinders are taped off and painted to create holiday patterns and used in a tablescape. Little terra-cotta pots are filled with plaster and coiled wire to use as place-card holders so that later on fun photos from the evening can be added as the perfect take-home party favor.
